Border initiative should bring federal boost to N.M.

* Pilot program embracing Santa Teresa, Deming and Columbus can coordinate housing, transportation aid

Deming, Columbus and Santa Teresa are three New Mexico towns that should be able to benefit from the Southwest Border Economic Development Initiative, launched last year by President Clinton.

Vice President Al Gore in June selected Deming as one of four communities to participate in a pilot program of the initiative that will attempt to coordinate federal agency assistance based on each community's strategic plan.

"These communities will coordinate local economic and community development efforts with designated federal agency teams in all four states bordering Mexico," Gore said in a release. …
