Some coaches really get down to the basics when it comes to working with children. YMCA instructor Ron Torres starts by teaching his young "athletes" how to share the soccer ball.

"Actually, they get to use their very own tot-sized ball until the third class," said Torres, who teaches Itty-Bitty Sports for kids ages 3 to 5 through the Heights YMCA.

During nine weeks of Saturday classes, his young charges get their first look at soccer, basketball and tee-ball. Using pint-sized equipment, the children will jump to score baskets in a 4-foot hoop, swing 24-inch baseball bats, and dribble and kick miniature basketballs and soccer balls. …
