Panel Lists 6 City Schools As Likely Takeover Targets.

A state Board of Education committee recommended Wednesday that 26 schools, including six in Albuquerque, become the first group of schools to face a possible state takeover.

The board's Accountability Committee, meeting in Albuquerque, recommended that the full board on Friday send notice to the schools that they must quickly raise student achievement. The schools were warned in 1997 by the federal Title I program that they needed to improve.

The 26 schools also were among 164 schools listed as probationary under a new accountability system the board started in August. Other probationary schools will have three years to show dramatic gains; the 26 schools must show significant gains within two years. …
