Pueblo To Custom-Cut Wood In Effort To Boost Economy.

JEMEZ PUEBLO Jemez Pueblo will begin producing custom beams and lumber for luxury homes after a new mill is completed within the next month, Pueblo Gov. Raymond Gachupin said Tuesday.

Gachupin said the pueblo is building the custom cutting mill using a $500,000 Commerce Department grant to provide the capital. The pueblo has bought a logging truck for its new timber company, the Walatowa Woodlands Initiative, he said.

"We're hoping to tap into the market that is building a lot of customized homes," Gachupin said.

William Whatley, director of Walatowa Woodlands, said "demand is incredibly high" for custom wood cutting and that he is in negotiations on several contracts from as far away as Seattle. …
