Senate Panel Hears Scientists

WASHINGTON Two nuclear scientists disagreed Tuesday about the threat to national security posed by the secret data Wen Ho Lee copied from a Los Alamos National Laboratory computer.

Stephen Younger, a deputy director for nuclear weapons at Los Alamos, told a Senate Judiciary subcommittee he viewed the data as the "crown jewels" of U.S. nuclear technology.

"If the design of the most significant nuclear weapons on the planet are not the crown jewels, then I don't know what is," Younger said.

But John Richter, a retired Los Alamos lab weapons designer, said even if the data fell into the hands of a hostile nation, that country could not necessarily use the information to build a nuclear weapon. …
