At the Coleman Vision USTA Challenger, Nicoleta Spilca's knowledge of her second-round opponent in the qualifying tournament was roughly the same as that of her first foe: she knew her adversary's world ranking must be 800 or better to be in the tourney.

Spilca, a University of New Mexico senior who got into the event at Highpoint Sports and Wellness in Albuquerque as a local wild-card entry, was right about that.

Except that Monday's opponent, Kirstin Freye of Germany, actually had a ranking of 374 in the world about 400 spots higher than LaShawnn Jones, whom Spilca beat on Sunday.

Those extra rungs up the women's tennis ladder must mean something. …
