Utility, EPA To Discuss Sewage Spill.

* City disagrees with the agency that one million gallons of sludge was dumped into the Rio Grande

City utility officials this week will hash out differences with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency about a July sewage spill into the Rio Grande.

The EPA in August issued the city a disciplinary order that says the city violated its discharge permit when it allowed 1 million gallons of treated sludge to flow from one of its treatment plants into the river more than twice the amount the city first estimated.

City officials dispute that figure and say even their earlier estimate that 400,000 gallons of sludge went into the river was inflated and that only 6,400 gallons were dumped.

A "show cause" meeting between the two entities has been set for 9 a.m. Thursday at the EPA Regional Office in Dallas.

"We're going to try to resolve the differences outlined in the administrative order," EPA spokesman David Bary said. …
