* Fired police chief to receive $21,000, fire chief reinstated, insurer says

SUNLAND PARK The fired police chief and fire chief have settled their federal lawsuits accusing the city and four city councilors of firing them for political reasons.

Fire Chief Robert Monsisvaiz's dismissal has been rescinded and former Police Chief Ricardo Perez will receive a $21,000 settlement, according to the New Mexico Self Insurers Fund, Sunland Park's insurance agency.

In return, Perez and Monsisvaiz each will drop their $1 million lawsuits.

The two chiefs filed the lawsuits in early April against the city and Councilors Victor Diaz, William Duran, Alicia Roman and Luz Vargas-Troncoso after they voted to fire them. …
