Domenici Guarantees Rio Grande Projects.(New Mexico)

Habitat restoration and other projects along the middle Rio Grande will receive more than $16 million if President Clinton signs the Energy and Water Development appropriations bill.

Clinton has threatened to veto the bill, but Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., vowed Monday that the river funding would go through.

"There will be no changes in what we provide for the Rio Grande," he said.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation would get $7.4 million for several projects, including protection of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow. Money would go to improve habitat between Cochiti Lake and Elephant Butte Reservoir, to relocate minnows upstream to where more water is available and to fund research and monitoring. …
