UNM Group To Tackle Workload, Low Salaries

Ann Nihlen, a faculty member in the University of New Mexico Anthropology Department, has learned to carry chalk in her pocket to class because she can't count on having any otherwise.

It's a small thing, but when faculty members look at money going into the university's $200,000-plus public relations campaign designed to promote all the things in which UNM should take pride indignation isn't far from the surface.

Not only do faculty salaries lag behind peers, but fewer tenure-track faculty are doing more work, says UNM sociology professor Beverly Burris, a member of the Faculty Organizing Committee.
