Staffing Shortage Prompts Action

TAOS As of 8 a.m. today, the now-closed Taos county jail will be operated only as a booking and 24-hour holding facility under the jurisdiction of the Taos County Sheriff's Department.

The temporary measure, worked out in a series of meetings over the weekend between county officials and Sheriff Charlie Martinez, is designed to assist law enforcement agencies in processing prisoners arrested in Taos County before they are transferred to out-of-county jails, Taos County Attorney Mary Lane Leslie said Sunday.

The emergency closure of the problem-plagued jail originally scheduled to be closed Oct. 18 was ordered Friday night by County Manager Robert Dale Morrison after a detention center officer scheduled to work the midnight-to-8 a. …
