Jackson says goodbye to motel that supported him on the court.

Local tennis player Wesley Jackson has decided he wants more time to play. Jackson has sold his 91-room Motel 1 at 2001 Candelaria NE and Interstate 25, which his family had built in 1981.

Jackson oversaw management of the motel at the same time he pursued and won three national tennis titles. But while he enjoys competition on the courts, competition in the motel industry here has gotten too stiff. He has seen revenues decline over the past five years with more and more motels springing up around his.

"Success breeds excess," he lamented.

His goal was to retire from the motel business by age 50. "I beat that by a year," the 49-year-old said. He plans to train for a world championship next year and looks forward to leisure traveling.
