New way to rate agencies.

That is how Erik Pfeiffer, director of the city's Office of Economic Development, explained the impetus behind a change under way in how the city monitors the progress of its two convention marketing agencies: the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce.

At stake are contracts worth millions of dollars annually.

Up until now, the city's Economic Development office has tracked performance of the organizations, which work to draw visitors to the Duke City, according to how many hotel rooms are booked at local lodging establishments.

But the bureau, chamber and city agree that methodology doesn't necessarily tell the whole story. …
