The city of Santa Fe's legal experts are currently wondering whether the city should get involved in the court battle over water to save the Rio Grande silvery minnow.

The answer is yes, and soon. The battle over the minnow affects everyone along the river and its tributaries.

It's a battle that began with the drought and a lawsuit brought by environmentalists against federal agencies in charge of managing the river's flow and protecting its wildlife. Environmentalists want to force these agencies to keep enough water in the river for the endangered minnow to survive. In dry years, that could mean releasing stored water from the dams upstream of the minnow's designated critical habitat around Socorro. …
