Monthlong festival brings jazz stars to Santa Fe.(Arts & Culture)

* Organizer hopes new event jump-starts music scene in hometown

Santa Fe guitarist Bruce Dunlap says he has to leave his hometown Santa Fe to hear good jazz.

He wants to help reverse that situation with his Santa Fe Jazz and International Music Festival, which opens Friday.

The monthlong, 24-concert festival includes such jazz stars as vibist Gary Burton, saxophonist Dave Liebman, Brazilian vocalist Dori Caymmi, bassist Dave Holland and young pianist Brad Mehldau.

Among the world music notables performing are Trio Globo, Simon Shaheen and Jai Uttal.

"I really want to try to jump-start more of a music scene here in Santa Fe," said Dunlap, the executive director of the festival and of the sponsoring Open Arts Foundation. …
