Qualifying Opens Challenger Tourney.(Sports)

A chance to better their position within the world women's tennis rankings and a shot at a portion of $50,000 in prize money are the prime motivating factors at the USTA Challenger event, which begins today at Highpoint Sports and Wellness.

The Coleman Vision Women's Challenger 2000 tournament opens with qualifying play. Four qualifiers will advance to the main singles draw, which begins Tuesday and will culminate next Sunday. Thirty-two players will compete in the main draw, with 25 players already in, maintaining world rankings ranging from 68 to 181.

Last year's winner of the Challenger event, in its third year in Albuquerque, was Jennifer Hopkins, who leaped in ranking from 709 to 136 in only one year. …
