* Oktoberfest in Haynes Park commemorates the traditional German event started in 1810

Beer, polka music and 800 pounds of bratwurst were enjoyed by thousands of New Mexicans at the 17th annual Oktoberfest in Rio Rancho.

Germans and non-Germans alike gathered under a huge tent in Haynes Park to celebrate the traditional event that started in Germany in 1810.

George Kitchen, Rio Rancho's Oktoberfest Association president, said he hopes the event will raise at least $30,000, to be donated primarily to local charities including Storehouse West and St. Felix's Pantry. Proceeds also will benefit charitable groups such as the Lion's Club. …
