*Forest-thinning drive gains momentum in East Mountains with help of local residents

Despite rainy weather Saturday, about 25 East Mountains residents participated in a forest thinning project meant to reduce fire danger along N.M. 337.

The thinning project, a multi-agency effort to clear private and public lands of overgrown trees, was held at the Carolino Canyon picnic ground about nine miles south of old Route 66 on N.M. 337.

"It was a real cooperative effort between the different agencies and the citizens," said East Mountains resident and environmental biologist April Fletcher, who helped organize the event. …
