Federal Cases in N.M. Up 63% in Past 5 Years, Judge Says.(Metro & New Mexico)

Federal cases in New Mexico have jumped more than 63 percent in the past five years, Chief U.S. District Court Judge James A. Parker said this week.

With only four active district judges to handle the increase, New Mexico is the second-busiest among the nation's 94 federal judicial districts, behind the southern district of California, Parker told 125 people at an Albuquerque Bar Association luncheon Tuesday.

Parker said the biggest growth is in criminal cases a 250 percent jump between 1995 and 2000, with civil cases increasing 32 percent in the same period. …
