More than 24 hours after the polls closed Tuesday, only two things were certain in New Mexico House District 15: Someone named Sanchez won and someone else named Sanchez lost.

Still up in the air the day after Election Day was which one incumbent Raymond Sanchez, the Democrat and the longtime House speaker, or Republican newcomer John Sanchez was on the winning and the losing end in the North Valley race in Bernalillo County.

Problems in tabulating Bernalillo County votes held up final results in what had shaped up as a close contest in House District 15 and in races for some other offices as well.

Meanwhile, Democrats appeared to retain their majorities in the state House and Senate.

Democratic wins Tuesday meant the party would most likely enhance its majority in the House by two to three seats, depending on the outcome of the Sanchez-Sanchez race. …
