Long Signs With Slam; Camp Starts.(Sports)

The New Mexico Slam's much-anticipated signing of former University of New Mexico guard Lamont Long finally occurred Wednesday, a day before the International Basketball League team opens training camp.

Coupled with the signing of former Colorado State center Joe Vogel, the Slam nearly will have a full roster when the team takes the court for the first time as a group at 9:30 a.m. at Sandia Pueblo.

The 6-foot, 4-inch Long finished last season with 18.7 points a game, best in the Mountain West Conference. Vogel, 6-10, was with the Los Angeles Clippers before being cut prior to the exhibition season.

By the weekend, Slam coach John Whisenant said he expects sign two more players and have 18 in camp for two-a-day practices. …
