* Officials seek source of error as workers count 67,000 early, absentee ballots

BERNALILLO COUNTY The promise of an efficient election was once again broken in Bernalillo County, where voters and candidates remain waiting for key election results.

The county still has to count more than 67,000 early and absentee ballots. The results of some races likely will remain in doubt until at least tonight.

Local election officials are not answering questions.

"I'll tell you what's really bad about this," said Denise Lamb, state Elections Bureau director. "We had 32 other counties in New Mexico that carried out their duties," counting ballots and reporting to the secretary of state despite weather so bad in some areas that sheriff's deputies had to be called on to bring in ballot boxes over slick roads.

Ballots in Bernalillo County are still being counted because of a problem tabulating straight party-ticket votes possibly 27,000 of them where voters designated they would support every candidate of a particular political party. …
