There were questionable calls and crazy bouncing balls. There were tough breaks and, in the end, countless heartaches.

Even as the sun peeked through a black November sky late in the game, the Estancia High football team could find no rays of sunshine in its thoroughly frustrating 24-13 defeat at the hands of defending Class AA state champion Eunice. The loss came in the opening round of the state playoffs Saturday at the jam-packed Estancia football field.

In the aftermath, somebody asked somber Estancia senior quarterback Steve Coburn how long it would take to get over the defeat. "I don't think I'll ever get over it," said Coburn.

The Bears opened the playoffs truly believing this was their season to add a state championship trophy to the case, something Estancia has not done since 1979.

And despite a determined effort against a proud Eunice team in quest of its third state title in six years, Estancia seemed to come up on the short end of every crucial moment in the game.

"It just wasn't our day it just wasn't our day," said Estancia head coach Tim Garro.
