Threats to Family Over Cases Cited

Will Duran, who was hired as Moriarty's police chief in June, resigned Monday, saying differences with the City Council and telephone threats led to his departure.

In a telephone interview Tuesday, Duran said he faced a constant struggle dealing with the City Council over scheduling and hiring problems as well as other minor issues related to how the department does its job. Duran didn't want to comment on the specific issues.

"I'm thoroughly disappointed because I thought we could make a difference here," he said.

Duran said he also began feeling pressure from anonymous phone callers who didn't like the way he was doing his job. …
