Resident Claims He Found Illegal Signs

The Valencia County Commission declined to ban billboards in unincorporated areas of the county, saying it didn't think there was a problem with visual pollution.

Resident Vincent Chavez asked for a moratorium of at least a year and urged the county to develop a more restrictive sign ordinance to protect its natural beauty.

Although the county requires that signs be registered, Chavez said he found at least 120 signs that were not permitted.

"You have a responsibility to do something about this issue," Chavez told commissioners.

Landowner Jack Huning pointed out that the commission during Monday's meeting lauded Century High School students and the Tierra Bonita organization for their efforts to beautify the county. …
