Dona Ana Candidate Runs in Dem District

Dona Ana County Commissioner Miguel G. Silva, Republican incumbent, was trying to win an uphill battle for re-election in the heavily Democratic district he came to represent in the most unlikely of ways.

Silva, whose District 2 includes the working-class, heavily Hispanic border town of Sunland Park, as well as Anthony and Santa Teresa, was appointed to the seat by Gov. Gary Johnson in July after his predecessor committed suicide.

Silva's predecessor was Eduardo "Lalo" Medina, the 52-year-old former police chief of Sunland Park. When Medina disappeared last June, he faced a 68-count criminal complaint alleging repeated sexual contact with a female relative. …
