Dropout Rate Lowers College Attendance

National self-interest demands that the United States' booming Hispanic population become a much better-educated group, says the head of a national association that works to reach that goal.

Hispanics comprise one out of three new workers joining the labor force a number expected to jump to one of every two new workers over the next 50 years, says Antonio Flores, president of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities based in San Antonio, Texas.

But because of high dropout rates, Hispanics lag behind in getting to college and tend to be disproportionately enrolled in two-year colleges when they enroll in higher-education institutions, he says. …
