Voters Uphold Term Limitations

The chance to radically change local government by unifying Bernalillo County and the city of Albuquerque won approval by voters statewide Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

A constitutional amendment that would, with a series of votes on charters, create one government out of two was leading 54 percent to 46 percent, with 89 percent of the precincts counted.

A second amendment that would have ended term limits for elected county officials apparently was headed for defeat, with 73 percent of voters opposed.

City and county officials came up with the consolidation plan as outlined in the amendment, and the Legislature voted last year to put it on the ballot, as it did the term limits measure. …
