Movies Shouldn't Be Time-Fillers.(Opinion)


The Rio Rancho School District formed its policy regarding the showing of movies in classrooms when it had only elementary and middle schools. The addition of a high school has presented a problem.

Current policy permits the showing of rated PG movies alone. A PG movie is considered suitable for showing before any audience.

The Board of Education is considering permitting the showing of PG-13 movies to high schoolers, but keeping the PG restriction for elementary students. PG-13 movies are considered suitable for youths 13 and older and can contain mild profanity, some violence and brief nudity.

This sounds like a reasonable policy provided that the movie serves some genuine learning purpose in line with the course and an alternative activity is offered. …
