Looking more like a banker in his suit and tie than a farm worker, Alfredo Vasquez Salcido, 77, cast his first vote as an American citizen Tuesday.

Vasquez Salcido became a U.S. citizen on Aug. 9, but he has dreamed of voting since coming to the United States 20 years ago.

He, his wife, Socorro and one of their seven children left Chihuahua, Mexico, to better their lives by working the fields in California.

The rest of the family stayed in Chihuahua but he says the family here will never go back "to the other side. …
