Workers Ordered To Keep Counting

Voting machine shortages, bad weather and fatigued vote-counters topped the list of problems facing voters and election officials on Tuesday.

A voting machine shortage hit Sandoval County because election officials made a mistake when ordering the machines.

Weather problems included more than 2 feet of snow in places, keeping some election workers from the polls in southern New Mexico.

In Bernalillo County, Clerk Judy Woodward ordered an about-face after learning that absentee ballot precinct judge Aggie Lopez sent vote-counters home shortly after 9 p.m.

Lopez had wanted to wait until today to count 1,316 absentee ballots and to turn in the tallies for 220 early votes. …
