N.M. Stays Close Late Into Night


Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore clung to a narrow lead early today in the race for New Mexico's five electoral votes, according to unofficial results.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Gore was ahead 48 percent to 47 percent for Republican George W. Bush.

But still-unclear absentee ballot counts from precincts around the state kept Republicans hopeful that Bush could eke out a victory in the state.

New Mexico had just five electoral votes to offer in the national contest, but Bush and Gore showered the state with attention throughout the general election campaign. …
