Today I hope to give you a lesson in High School Football Tie-Breaking 101. The topic? The beloved 13-point rule.

Before embarking, let's set the record straight. We all are aware of how much whining and complaining is done about the New Mexico Activities Association and its various rules, interpretations and quirky scheduling from fans, schools and media alike. There are any number of items that need rethinking or tweaking like the parking and traffic fiasco at last weekend's state soccer tournament but since almost nothing is done without the schools' approving it, culpability is a two-way street.

However, today's subject is unique in that everyone seems to agree it has been a success. In my years covering high school football, and this dates back to 1985, I could count on one hand the number of legitimate complaints about the 13-point rule being an injustice. …
