AARP President Looks At State Programs Up Close.

* Canja delivers food and information on her first visit to New Mexico

With a tie-dye AARP T-Shirt blazing out of her olive green suit, Esther "Tess" Canja, headed to Old Santa Fe Trail Monday afternoon with white bags of Southwestern food to drop off at a residence.

Canja, the president of the organization, said she expected more of a desert climate on her first visit to the Land of Enchantment. The state chapter invited her to come and observe the AARP Public Benefit Outreach Project and the New Mexikids Outreach Intergenerational Project.

"It helps to get out of Washington and see the realities of the programs we're talking about," she said. …
