Almost a Million Registered To Vote.(New Mexico)

About 974,000 New Mexicans are registered to vote today, an increase of about 16 percent from 1996, when the latest presidential contest was held.

"We got 65,000 new (voter) registrations between the primary and the general, and I'm hopeful all those people are really engaged in the process," said Denise Lamb, director of the state Bureau of Elections.

Turnout during presidential elections historically is higher than during other elections, Lamb said.

New Mexico's best voter turnout was in 1992, when 83.6 percent of those registered cast ballots. In 1996, 69.2 percent of registered voters cast ballots. …
