Bookkeeping Error Tied to Deficit

Money issues at the New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped involve a $1 million discrepancy in current ledger postings and a $3.5 million deficit in the proposed 2001-2002 budget, a Board of Regents official said last week.

But board vice president James Salas of Albuquerque said things are not all that bad. He said he expects the discrepancy to be straightened out and the future budget to be headed back into balance by the time the board meets Saturday.

"There is absolutely no evidence of fraud," Salas said of the discrepancy. "I would call it a bookkeeping error, and we expect the expenditures to be reconciled by the time we meet again. …
