City Cool to Union Bus Pact, Mediation Proposals.(Metro & New Mexico)

A city official says a proposal by bus drivers for a one-year contract extension would actually cost the city about $2 million more than the union's estimate of $1.5 million.

The city also is skeptical of a call by Local 1745 of the United Transportation Union for mediations between the city and union to be open to the public.

"The mediation process is established by city ordinance," said Lawrence Rael, the city's chief administrative officer, "and it is not an open process."

Rael said the city recently dropped personnel actions against three union officials as a good-faith gesture to get the negotiations restarted. …
