Think of everything you see and experience as food for your brain. Just as a diet of junk food can create chronic problems for your body, a mental diet of violence and sex can weave itself into a growing child's mind.

Victor Strasburger has been working on the effects of media on children and teens for the last 20 years, but he has had a hard time convincing others of the harmful effects.

The professor of pediatrics and family medicine at the University of New Mexico must have won over some of his peers, though. He received two awards in late October from the American Academy of Pediatrics at its annual meeting in Chicago. The Adele Delenbaugh Hofmann Award was given to him for outstanding lifetime achievement in adolescent medicine. …
