Flu Can Lead To Pneumonia

New Mexicans worried about whether they can get a flu shot this season might consider thinking about another important vaccination.

If you're at high risk for the complications of influenza, then you also should get a pneumococcal vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That vaccine helps prevent the most common form of pneumonia acquired outside of the hospital and pneumonia usually is the complication of influenza that kills people. About 20,000 people in this country die each year of influenza complications.

"We're asking our clinics to stock up on pneumococcal vaccine," said Gary Simpson, medical director for infectious diseases with the state Department of Health. …
