Waiting for Flu Shot Helps Most in Need.(Editorial Page)


It is unfortunate there is a nationwide shortage of vaccine as flu season draws near. Some manufacturers apparently had difficulty in growing needed strains, while others reported production problems.

Now, as some doctors and other health-care providers await vaccine for high-risk patients, batches have reached retail stores. It's not the fault of the stores; perhaps the companies with which they contract simply received early shipments.

But it does create a situation in which the vaccine could be going to the least needy people first. For instance, some medically fragile people who need the vaccine to make it through the winter might not be able to go to a store. …
