District 4AAAAA Chase Is in Chaos

The only thing certain in District 4AAAAA heading into this weekend's high school football games was that if Clovis won at Manzano on Saturday, the Wildcats would clinch a playoff berth.

That, however, didn't happen.

Monarchs kicker Mikael Bjork not only sent his team to a 17-14 victory with a 40-yard field goal with seven seconds left but also sent district coaches back to the drawing board to figure out potential tiebreakers after next week's play.

Manzano (4-5, 1-2) came back from a 14-6 deficit to win their first district contest. Clovis took the eight-point lead in the third quarter when Nathan Nuttall faked a punt return reverse and raced 90 yards for a touchdown.

But the Monarchs tied the game early in the fourth quarter after driving 77 yards, largely behind the rugged running of senior Jacob Hunter.

His 2-yard burst with 10:33 left brought Manzano to within two points. Monarchs quarterback Matt Shoemaker then barely squeezed into the right corner of the end zone on a conversion run to even the game. …
