Ex-President Praises Son as Stars Hail Gore in State Campaign Stops

Campaign 2000 steamed toward the Election Day finish line with a flurry of stump speeches and rallies across a chilly and damp New Mexico on Saturday.

With three days to go before New Mexico voters go to the polls Tuesday to choose a president not to mention a senator, U.S. House members and a host of state legislators, judges and local officials candidates were burning shoe leather and straining vocal chords from one end of the state to the other.

Former President Bush touted his son's qualifications for the presidency at a Republican rally in Farmington.

He did not mention Texas Gov. George W. Bush's 1976 arrest for drunken driving but stressed honesty and integrity and said criticism of his son has prompted him lately to shout back at his television set.

"It's just like he was in Little League the umpire calls it a strike, but you know very well it was a ball," the former president said. "That's the same way I feel when you go after my kid. …
