Wayland White puts an exclamation point on a long, circuitous journey

Wayland White finds himself surrounded by a lot of new faces on the University of New Mexico men's basketball team this season.

But that's nothing new for White, one of only two Lobos seniors, who has been in similar situations time and again.

"I'm used to it," says the 6-foot, 6-inch, 225-pound jumping jack, who's seldom without a smile. "I was raised in Mississippi, then went to Milwaukee, then to school in Iowa and now in New Mexico. I've gotten accustomed to different people. I've made a pretty good adjustment to playing with different people and different coaches."

This year's turnover came when a rash of players defected following last season, the first under coach Fran Fraschilla. The coach vowed to bring in his type of players and says he has done just that with a half-dozen newcomers.

White is one of the few holdovers and the only returning starter. He, too, was recruited by Fraschilla a year ago. …
