"Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver

HarperCollins, $26, 464 pp.

First, a caveat: I am an unabashed Barbara Kingsolver fan. I have read almost everything she has written and enjoyed every moment.

The pleasure in her work comes from well-chosen words, absorbing stories and flawed but likable characters. But, even beyond that, she weaves threads of her own values through her tales that transmit a deeper meaning to events.

If you disagree with her ideals, that undercurrent might be annoying. If you agree with them, it is a joy.

The theme in this book is given straight off the top, and repeated at the ending. …
