Federico Garcia Lorca is the patron saint of contemporary Spanish poets, and like many saints, he was martyred, shot by Franco's Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War for being a poet and a homosexual. He was 38.

During his life, he wrote a prodigious amount of poetry and drama. His poetry includes "El Poeta en Nueva York," "Poema del Cante Jondo," and "Romancero Gitano."

His plays included fantastical light theater, but his tragic trilogy of "Yerma," "Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding)," and "La Casa de Bernarda Alba" (The House of Bernarda Alba) are the works he is most remembered for, and are most widely produced. …
