Lobos Concerned With Defense.(Sports)

Junior guard Molly McKinnon looks back at the University of New Mexico women's basketball exhibition opener and sees it as a blessing in disguise.

Through sheer individual effort, the Houston Flight broke down the Lobos' perimeter defense time and again before ending up on the short end of an 89-85 score.

Most of the problems were caused by 5-foot, 7-inch guard Debra Williams, who hit 9 of 13 3-pointers.

"It was good to know right off that we needed to work on our defense," McKinnon says. "If we don't, we know the consequences."

McKinnon also knows that when the Lobos open their regular season Friday night against LSU in the Women's Sports Foundation Classic, the top-10-ranked Tigers will come equipped with players similar to Williams, especially All-American 2-guard Marie Ferdinand. …
