UNM Squanders Great Defensive Effort

Rarely has the University of New Mexico football team been in such command of a game in the first half. Rarer still has UNM had the opportunity to put itself in a commanding position for a bowl game.

The Lobos had both Saturday night and let them slip away in horrifying fashion.

San Diego State rallied from a 16-0 halftime deficit, and Nate Tandberg's 18-yard field goal with 5:27 left in the game was the final blow in the Aztecs' 17-16 victory over the Lobos in front of 21,007 fans at University Stadium.

UNM (5-5, 3-2 Mountain West Conference) still will go to a bowl game if it wins its last two games at UNLV and Brigham Young. Utah defeated UNLV 38-16 earlier in the day, giving the Rebels five losses. UNM can eliminate them from bowl contention with a victory later this week. …
