SANTA ANA PUEBLO Fighting against both a freezing rain and determined opponent, the Santa Fe Prep boys soccer team was defeated in Friday's semifinals of the Class A-AAA state playoffs at the New Mexico Tournament Soccer Complex near Bernalillo.

Dropping a tough 2-1 decision to Albuquerque's Sandia Prep, the Blue Griffins now head to today's consolation match against crosstown rival St. Michael's. The Horsemen lost in Friday's second semifinal, 6-0, to top-ranked Santa Teresa.

Friday's setback was largely due to Sandia Prep's dominating second-half attack that produced 19 shots on goal. The Sundevils controlled the tempo throughout the final 40 minutes as the Griffins managed just three shots of their own.

"The second half was the key," said Santa Fe Prep coach Todd Kurth, whose team dropped to 12-4-4 with the loss. …
