More Groups Chime In on Minnow's Habitat Designation.(New Mexico)

Several groups have waded into the controversy over habitat for the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow, filing briefs late last month in an ongoing lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The service last year designated the 170 miles of the river from Cochiti Dam to Elephant Butte Reservoir as "critical habitat" that must stay wet for the tiny fish.

Irrigators and others who rely on water from the Rio Grande worry that keeping water in the river for the minnow could leave them without the water they need.

Rep. Joe Skeen, R-N.M., the New Mexico chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties and the Economic Forum argued against the designation of habitat for the tiny fish. …
