Abortion, Vouchers Separate Candidates

LAS CRUCES Differences over abortion, school vouchers and gun control separated Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., and his Republican challenger, Bill Redmond, during a televised debate here Friday.

Bingaman said he supported a woman's right to choose abortion, a right established by the Supreme Court's Roe vs. Wade decision.

"The alternative is for politicians in Washington to be telling everyone in the country what they ought to be doing," said Bingaman, the three-term incumbent and former New Mexico attorney general.

But Redmond, who held the 3rd Congressional District seat for about 16 months after winning a special election, said, "The Supreme Court has been wrong in the past, and the Supreme Court is wrong on this particular issue. …
